Nick Blackwell is well and truly on the mend, no thanks to the boxing communities well wishes and positive energy.
David Haye has been supporting Blackwell with his recovery, donating money from his next fight and inviting him to watch his bout with Arnold Gjergjaj at the O2 in London this weekend.
Haye is looking at raising £50,000 for the retired middleweight boxer. This will no doubt be of great help as Nick is now out of the sport for good.
“Nick’s coming, which is great,” said the Haymaker. “He’s going to be ringside and we’ve got him doing some commentary work as well.”
“I’m not sure exactly how much I’ll be able to give him and I won’t know for definite until a week or so after the fight, but I’m aiming to get at least £50,000. That would be a nice lump to help him move on.”
Haye had a good chat with Nick recently and had this to say, “He’s in good spirits and sounds as sharp as a tack. I was worried about how he was going to be, but he sounds better than ever.”
“It’s really good to have a good chat with him and knowing he’s coming to the fight to do a bit of commentary.”
“It’s good that he’s getting back out there because we haven’t seen much of him since the event.”
“I wasn’t close to him, but I became aware of him because I heard about the gym sessions he did with Carl Froch and George Groves. Both of them said he was a handful and could walk through anything.”
“When you get world-class fighters telling me about this guy, who’s a middleweight, doing that to them, then his name sticks out.”
“I saw a few of his fights and obviously the big fight with Chris Eubank Junior, which had a horrendous ending. But thankfully, he’s in perfect health now.”
“I completely understand that, and one of the things I’ve focused on is not bulking up unnecessarily.”
“Being bigger is not necessarily being better, putting on an extra stone does not make me punch any harder. It will just make my punches a little slower.”
