According to an expert, Nick Blackwell will never fight again after sustaining a brain bleed in his fight with Chris Eubank Jr at the SSE Arena on Saturday night.
The neurosurgeon who played a major part in saving Michael Watson’s life after his fight with Chris Eubank Jr’s father, Eubank snr, back in 1991 said its highly unlikely that Nick Blackwell will ever fight again.
Nick Blackwell was put into an induced coma after his fight with Eubank Jr. This was to help his body rest and recover the best it can. The fight was eventually stopped in the 10th round after Blackwell had a severely swollen eye.
Peter Hamlyn was the neurological surgeon who operated on Watson after his fight with Eubank snr.
Hamlyn said to the Telegraph, “Hopefully because Mr Blackwell did not have hypoxia in addition to the brain injury, the swelling won’t be too bad, and over the forthcoming days the pressure in his brain will normalise, they will be able to lighten the anaesthetic and, hopefully, he will emerge with very little damage.”
“But it is very unlikely that he will box again.”
“There were two things we learnt from the case of Michael Watson 25 years ago. One was followed, one was not.”
