51 year old boxing legend Bernard Hopkins has been saying he would like one last ‘big named’ fight before he looks at retirement. He has made it clear that he would face GGG and he also has an idea how he could beat him.
Bernard has said “I was a middleweight terror for 12 years in my career, there’s a killer ruling the middleweight division right now, a guy that’s knocking everyone out, guys are turning down 2 million dollar purses to not fight this guy, I would of fought this guy for $50,000 back then because I wanted to show that I was the best fighter at that weight division.” Hopkins went on to say, “The only threat out there, the only guy out there that no one wants to fight between 160 to 168lbs is GGG.”
Bernard said how it’s good to see a guy like GGG dominating like how he dominated in his career.
GGG has said, “why not I would want this fight with Bernard, I respect him, he’s a good boxer a good fighter.” “I think it’s a great fight for everybody a great fight for the fans.”
Managing Director of K2 Promotions Tom Loeffler, who handles Golovkin said that he is “interested” in a fight with Bernard Hopkins at 168lbs after the Golovkin vs Wade fight on April 23rd. Loeffler went on to explain, “If Billy Joe Saunders is not willing to fight, Canelo is not willing to fight, then we would have to consider a marketable name at 168 and Hopkins is more active than Andre Ward so it makes sense.”
Loeffler saying that Bernard Hopkins is more active than Andre Ward is a little mysterious to me though, as Bernard Hopkins hasn’t had a fight since November 2014 where Andre Ward had a fight June of 2015. I guess we will just have to wait and see.
The fight would likely take place at the 168lbs super-middleweight limit, a meeting in the middle for middleweight champion Golovkin and long campaigning light-heavyweight Hopkins.
