Heavy hitting middleweight Andy Lee’s last outing cost him the WBO middleweight title, losing to Billy Joe Saunders in December of last year in a 12 round majority decision defeat.
Lee, 31, has said he will be back in June and will fight in New York City, but he is yet to confirm who he will be facing.
Rumours circulating around the boxing social media pages are suggesting he may fight Miguel Cotto. The choice of city would back up this rumour as Madison Square Garden in New York City has long been the home of Miguel Cotto. Also, as the Puerto Rico star is also coming off a loss, it would make sense for Cotto to have his next fight in front of his loyal fans in The Garden.
Andy Lee, now 34-3-1 with 24 KO’s is said to be on the hunt for his title back: “I want to win my title back. It hurts losing it. I worked hard to get it and I want to get it back just as badly.”
Fighting and possibly beating a big name like Miguel Cotto would do the world of good for Lee who is currently ranked 6th with the WBO. That’s not bad considering Lee hasn’t won a fight since 2014.
Some will think Andy will just take on anyone, to get a win under his belt, but I’m not so sure. He isn’t getting any younger, he’ll be 32 in June. Has he got that much time to have a few fights over the coming years to get back on top. A fight with Cotto could be perfect.
