There has been much talk this year about Floyd Mayweather Jr. coming back to boxing to face Gennady Golovkin.
This is a very unlikely thing to happen in the minds of many boxing fans and critics, but for me, I think it’s completely possible.
It’s not like we haven’t seen this sort of thing in boxing before. In 1987 after being retired for 3 years, Sugar Ray Leonard came back to fight heavy handed middleweight champion Marvin hagler. A fight that everyone thought Leonard was crazy to take.
Leonard was able to comeback after a three year layoff and defeat the stronger Hagler on points. One of the judges, Jose Juan Guerra scored the fight 118-110 to Leonard.
So it’s not impossible for a fighter to comeback and face a bigger opponent and win after a spell away from the ring.
According to GGG’s trainer, Mayweather seems ‘fixated’ on a comeback fight with Golovkin. “He is saying things about a comeback, he just seems to be fixated on Golovkin. I’ve seen three or four pieces in the last couple of weeks where he’s talking about beating Golovkin, it looks like he’s laying the ground work for something, whether it’s Golovkin or somebody else.”
Should Floyd comeback and fight GGG, I’m sure it’ll be a massive ‘business’ decision. As this fight would create such amazing interest that could make the fight one of the biggest PPV events in the history of the sport.
Floyd Mayweather has said that Golovkin would be no real challenge, explaining how GGG has nice power but that’s it. Floyd said, “GGG is straight up and down, he’s special effects, that’s easy work.”
I’m going to go against the grain here and say I think this fight is a possibility, but don’t expect to see it at 160lbs, this fight, if made will be between 152 – 154 pounds.
