47 year old Roy Jones Jr. has reportedly decided to hang up his gloves. The report came out of Russia where Roy recently gained citizenship.
Roy’s career was as spectacular as his fighting style. A top figure and talent in boxing, Roy Jones Jr. was born on January 16, 1969, in Pensacola, Florida. He won the light middleweight silver medal at the 1988 Olympics and controversially missed out on gold. Roy was the first middleweight boxer to win the heavyweight title in over 100 years.
Roy’s last fight was against Enzo Maccarinelli, a fight he was badly knockout in. Many were hoping that Roy would finally retire with fear for his safety in the sport. As much of Roy’s work and legendary status was built years ago.
Roy will now probably return to his roll as being a boxing commentator.
Roy will be missed by many, but many more will believe it is time to leave the sport that he set alight.
Roy has stated on his Twitter this week that there is no ‘official’ retirement yet and how that will be his announcement to make.
You will be missed Roy, good luck.
Here are his career highlights.
