Gennady Golovkin has said in an interview with Tha Boxing Voice that if the remarkable happens and Amir ‘King’ Khan beats Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on May 7th, then it’ll be bad for boxing and Khan wouldn’t be the real middleweight champion.
Golovkin said that Amir Khan is too small to be the middleweight champion. Amir Khan’s last fight was at 147lbs (welterweight) and now, should he win, he could become the 160lb champion. I’m not sure when or if this has ever been done before and could just be more of a reflection of how money makes fights now days.
Golovkin said on the subject of if Khan beat Canelo: “This is like 50/50 good and not good, this is a business plan, I am not a business man, I’m a boxer. 50% good if he becomes the middleweight champion, and 50% bad because he’s [Khan] too small and he’s not real middleweight champion.”
